Susan Montero was the first child born on Coyote, to Wendy Gunther, and Carlos Montero. Carlos served as Head of the Resistance in the fight for freedom against the Union, and later went on to serve as The Coyote Federation’s first President.
But her father’s position as President often caused the two to fight.
As she grew older, she developed a fascination with the local wildlife on Coyote, particularly the mysterious ‘Sandcrawlers’ or Chireep.
She studied at the Colonial University, and later became a lecturer and natural biologist. There had been several sightings of the small creatures near almost every settlement on Coyote… her father had the first known contact with the ‘Sandcrawlers’ and she had been kidnapped by them as a child. Yet she insisted that they were harmless, intelligent creatures. While many saw them as ‘pests’ she had identified their unique behaviour, and wished to study them.
When her father negotiated a trade agreement with the European Alliance, that brought land development to Coyote, on a much larger scale, Susan joined three other environmentalists who objected to what they saw as exploitation of Coyote’s land.
The Chireep were examples of intelligent life on Coyote… she and the other three environmentalists were determined to protect them… at all costs…
