FINAL COYOTE SPINOFF 'HEX' NEWS By Allen Steele

"The next novel set in the Coyote universe, HEX, has been turned in; it's scheduled to be published in hardcover by Ace in June, 2011, with an ebook edition appearing at about the same time. The new novel follows the narrative arc begun in SPINDRIFT and continued in GALAXY BLUES, and occurs after the events of COYOTE HORIZON and COYOTE DESTINY.

The paperback edition of COYOTE DESTINY will be published in February, 2011. A preview chapter from HEX will appear in that book.

Ron Miller and I will be the Guests of Honor at the Albacon 2010 science fiction convention, to be held Oct. 8-10, 2010, in Albany, New York. This is a rare joint appearance by both the author and illustrator of the Coyote novels, and a chance for readers of the series to hear them speak about the series and have their copies autographed by both persons. I will also be a featured Guest Author at MadCon 2010, to be held September 24-26 in Madison, Wisconsin. The Guest of Honor will be Harlan Ellison (his final SF convention appearance); other guests will include actress Sophie Aldred (from "Doctor Who"), artist Lisa Snelling, and authros Gene Wolfe, Peter David, Mark W.Tiedemann, Patrick Rothfuss, and others. "I've been waiting awhile to go public with news about the next Coyote novel, and now that everything has been squared away, the time has finally coming to spill the beans.

COYOTE DESTINY was finished on March 31, 2009, and sent to Ace the very next day (and, no, I didn't intend it to be an April Fool's joke). A couple of weeks ago, my editor at Ace, Ginjer Buchanan, formally accepted the novel; it will be published in March 2010, exactly a year after the publication of COYOTE HORIZON (which, not incidentally, will be coming out in paperback one month earlier, in February 2010).

Ron Miller has just turned in the cover painting for the new book. He based it upon a description I gave him, along with the scene from Part One from which is derived .... and I have to say that, of all the artwork Ron has done for these novels, this is one of his very best. We should have it here on the site pretty soon.

I don't want to discuss the novel itself, since the plot involves a resolution of the storyline begun in COYOTE HORIZON and I don't want to ruin things for those who haven't read that novel. At this juncture, though, I believe that COYOTE DESTINY will be the final book of the Coyote series. After ten years, I think I've said everything that needs to be said, and with this novel I've tried to wrap up everything. On the other hand, my wife reminds me that I said much the same thing when I wrote COYOTE FRONTIER; that being the case, it's always possible that I may change my mind.

Nor am I ruling out writing other novels set in the same universe, much as I've already done with SPINDRIFT and GALAXY BLUES. In fact, I've recently published a short story, "The Other Side of Jordan", in the new anthology FEDERATIONS, edited by John Joseph Adams and published by Prime Books, that takes place in what I'm now calling the Galactic Club series (aka the Coyote Universe). If you track down that story, you'll get an idea of what I may be doing next. Incidentally, I did a public reading of this story just last night in New York City, as part of the "New York Review of Science Fiction" monthly series of readings; it was very well attended, and I believe a recording of my reading will soon be posted somewhere on the Web.

So there you have it: a new novel coming soon, a new short story already out, and a hint or two of things to come. I hope you'll be around for all this."
