Leeport was founded as a direct result of the founding of Riverport, which later became Clarksburg. As Clarksburg was the first settlement to be founded west of New Florida, on the continent of land known as Great Dakota, Leeport developed on the far western side of New Florida, when the timber from Clarksburg began to be exported to other towns.
The Mayor of Leeport is former Chief Engineerer of the URSS Alabama, Dana Monroe, who named the settlement after her late husband, the legendary Robert E Lee, former Commanding Officer of the URSS Alabama.
Leeport is also known for ‘The Captain’s Lady’ a public house adjoined to Dana’s home.
